College loan rates expected to fall
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
Suggestions that interest rates may have to rise sharply to cool the house price boom have led to consumer concern over future rate moves. (article 4) The interest rates on federally backed loans for college students and their parents are expected to fall to a record low for the 2004-2005 academic year, lending institutions said. (article 6) The new rates were calculated by the SLM Corp., better known as Sallie Mae (article 6) Freddie Mac reported Thursday that rates on benchmark 30-year fixed-rate mortgages fell to 6.30 percent, down slightly from 6.34 percent the previous week, according to its nationwide survey of rates. (article 2) " The rise in mortgage rates stalled last week primarily because of rising tensions in other parts of the world, causing foreign investors to flee to the security of U.S. Treasuries said Mac. (article 2) At a mortgage rate of 4 per cent, borrowing £150,000 will cost £792 a month on a repayment basis, but just £500 with an interest-only mortgage, which represents an annual saving of £3,504. (article 9) The savings decrease as interest rates rise, because interest becomes a higher proportion of the monthly payment on a repayment mortgage at higher rates, especially in the early years of the mortgage. (article 9)
