Johnny Carson, late-night TV legend, dies at 79 (Entertainment, 19 articles)
Comedian Johnny Carson retired from the top-rated late-night entertainment show in 1992 after 30 years as one of the most popular TV personalities in the US. Carson's topical opening monologues and on-air banter with sidekick Ed McMahon and bandleader Doc Severinsen made his show a cultural touchstone, and his death saddened many in Hollywood who got their first big break on the program. (01-23) 18:58 PST NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) Carson's hometown remembered the longtime "Tonight Show" host Sunday for his modesty and generosity more than for his reign as the king of late-night television. Carson, who died Sunday at the age of 79, was a revered figure in Norfolk, where he lived from age 8 until he went into the Navy after his high school graduation in 1943. Carson, who has died from emphysema at the age of 79, was the founder and master of the genre that has become the television chat show. Carson, the iconic host of the most enduring U.S. night-time talk show, kept Americans up late for 30 years. "Tonight Show" TV host served America a smooth nightcap of celebrity banter, droll comedy and heartland charm for 30 years.
