Once the fog cleared and players finished their third rounds, Luke Donald and Tom Lehman shared the lead at the Buick Invitational. Woods finished his second round early yesterday with a birdie to cap off a 63 on the easier North course, then waited some six hours before the fog lifted enough to see fairways and greens, but not the Pacific Ocean. Lehman ehman made two birdies to regain the lead Friday, then waited out a three-hour fog delay and left everyone behind with two more birdies to close out a 5-under 67 on the tough South course and tie the 36-hole tournament record.

US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, not surprisingly, by beating another Russian in today's fourth round. Kuznetsova got only half of her first serves into play, relying on her powerful ground strokes in a 6-4, 6-2 win over Vera Douchevina . Seven Russian women made the fourth round, including three Grand Slam winners, although the opening match on Rod Laver Arena Melbourne Park's center court was the only all-Russian encounter.

Reuters Jan. 23 LONDON World heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko is ready for a re-match with Lennox Lewis if the Briton were to come out of retirement. Lewis did hint at a possible wish to return after Briton Danny Williams' battering at the hands of Klitschko in a world title bout in Las Vegas last month. It appears a little trash talk and loads of cash are about to lure Lewis out of retirement.

Tina Maze of Slovenia won a World Cup giant slalom for the third time this season yesterday while Lindsey Kildow of Vail, Colo., enjoyed her best result in the event by finishing ninth. Austrian Manfred Pranger claimed his first World Cup victory on Sunday by finishing first in the men's slalom in Kitzbuehel, Austria. Falling snow and poor visibility forced organizers to abandon Thursday's final training session for this weekend's classic downhill race in Kitzbuehel.

Marty Berryman has coached tennis for most of his adult life, first for nine years at Plano Senior High and then 16 years at Collin County Community College. Plano East blows em away Plano East was quick to take advantage of a stiff northerly wind during the championship game against Lewisville in the Plano Tournament of Champions. With the win, Plano West (24-5, 6-3) not only avenged a loss to Marcus (19-8, 5-4) but also took sole possession of third place in the district.

The Texas Rangers abruptly withdrew Sunday night from the competition to sign Carlos Delgado , leaving the New York Mets, Baltimore and Florida as the remaining bidders for the free-agent first baseman. After months of trying to make Delgado fit into their payroll and their lineup, the Rangers decided Sunday things were simply too complicated and ended their pursuit of the free agent. On Sunday, they added one caveat: That Delgado would be the designated hitter because the Rangers refuse to move Mark Teixeira to the outfield and set a domino effect of other moves in motion.

This one came a day after Hall of Fame coach Lenny Wilkens stepped down and Williams assumed the head job for the rest of the season. With Knicks president Isiah Thomas looking on from his usual vantage point in the tunnel behind the bench, Williams immediately set to work putting his imprint on the team. Wilkens woke up Saturday, headed to the New York Knicks' morning practice and quit as head coach of the NBA team.

At Arizona State 74, Oregon 65 Emily Westerberg scored a career-high 26 points, including 17 in the second half, to lead Arizona State. The No. 5 Stanford women's basketball team made a mockery of that idea Saturday night with a 94-58 victory over USC at Maples Pavilion.
