British troops die in Afghanistan (World, 12 articles) [UPDATE]
|
Ministers were forced on to the defensive over Britain's military deployment to Afghanistan, after intense fighting in the country yesterday followed the deaths of 14 service personnel when a Nato aircraft crashed on Saturday. More than 200 Taliban fighters and four Canadian soldiers were killed in a big offensive by Afghan and Nato forces that began this weekend, Nato said yesterday. Defence Secretary Des Browne has rejected any correlation between the deaths of 14 British military personnel in this weekend's air crash in Afghanistan and concerns that the troops are under-resourced in the country. The British forces suffered their most deadly day since the war on terror began when a RAF Nimrod surveillance aircraft from RAF Kinloss in Scotland crashed yesterday while supporting Nato ground operations in Afghanistan, killing all 14 servicemen on board. Political leaders and military experts have been giving their reaction to the news that 14 British service personnel have died when their Nimrod MR2 crashed in the southern Afghanistan province of Kandahar. `` The Ministry of Defense is extremely sorry to have to confirm that the aircraft lost in Afghanistan earlier today... was British, and that the crash led to 14 fatalities a ministry spokesman said in London.

Most Palestinian schoolteachers went on strike on Saturday, the first day of the school year, in the latest protest over wages for Palestinian government employees who have gone largely unpaid for nearly six months.
