CBC Arts: Religious leaders protest Madonna's glittery concert crucifixion (Entertainment, 5 articles)
Madonna delighted some and appalled others in Rome on Sunday with a controversial concert that included a mock crucifixion of the 47-year-old pop star. (Yui Mok/Associated Press) The performance was condemned by some religious officials but received rave reviews from many of the 70,000 in attendance at Rome's Olympic Stadium, located about three kilometres from the Vatican. During the song Live to Tell, Madonna who is a lapsed Catholic wore a crown of thorns and appeared against a mirrored cross. The scene, which has been included since the beginning of the tour in May, drew fire from both Muslim and Catholic leaders, who denounced it as an insult to the Roman Catholic Church. The pop star's representatives have said the performance was not intended to be disrespectful, and many fans also defended the scene. Johannes Mocken said Tuesday that authorities would be watching her concert on Sunday to see if legal action is warranted. Now on the European leg of the tour, the 47-year-old singer is set to perform Sunday at Rome's Olympic Stadium, located near the gates of Vatican City.

Peter Bradshaw on the Venice Film Festival (Entertainment, 4 articles) [UPDATE]
Two British icons dominated the opening of the Venice film festival: a dignified, elderly lady from London, and a feisty pop icon from Liverpool. Stephen Frears' superb film The Queen featured a cracking turn from Dame Helen Mirren, playing our emotionally dysfunctional head of state in 1997, fighting to regain the public's love after the Diana crash. Mirren, as the Queen, gives the sort of barnstorming performance that our unwritten constitution decrees must be rewarded with a shower of awards.
