Blair calls capture of British sailors 'very serious' (World, 27 articles) [UPDATE]
|
Iran on Thursday rolled back on a pledge to release a female British sailor, and a top official said the 15 captives may be put on trial. Iran's foreign minister had said Tehran would soon Seaman Faye Turney, the only woman among the sailors and marines seized last week while searching a merchant vessel in what Iran says were its territorial waters near Iraq. BAGHDAD - Iraq's foreign minister has urged Iran to free 15 detained British sailors and marines in a telephone call with his Iranian counterpart, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Iran says the military personnel entered Iranian waters illegally, but Britain says they were conducting a routine search of shipping in Iraqi waters in the Shatt al-Arab waterway between Iran and Iraq. At Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki struck a conciliatory tone, saying Ms Turney would be released today and that the British forces might have strayed into Iranian waters by mistake. Iran said Wednesday the detainees were arrested 0.3 miles inside Iranian waters, underscoring what some experts say is the uncertain nature of the boundary that is at the heart of the dispute.

NASCAR officials discovered the crew chiefs' infractions, designed to give their cars an aerodynamic advantage, during an inspection after Sunday's qualifying session. The pace of change entering the 2007 season is dizzying even by NASCAR standards, enough so to raise concerns about turning off longtime fans in an effort to attract new ones. Waltrip claimed to be so remorseful that he had to be coaxed into returning to Daytona International Speedway to compete in Thursday's 150-mile qualifying races, which represented his last chance to earn a spot in NASCAR's biggest race.
