ABC News: Senate OKs War Bill With Iraq Timeline
Summary from United States, from articles in English
[UPDATED] (see summary with new information since yesterday)
March 29, 2007 WASHINGTON - President George Bush yesterday emphatically condemned the "disastrous" Iraq pullout plans passed by congressional Democrats, and vowed to veto any bill that contains a withdrawal timeline. (article 22) Senate Democrats ignored a veto threat and pushed through a bill Thursday requiring Bush to start withdrawing troops from " the civil war in Iraq dealing a rare, sharp rebuke to a wartime commander in chief. (article 5) In a mostly party line 51-47 vote, the Senate signed off on a bill providing $122 billion to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. (article 5) WASHINGTON A defiant, Democratic-controlled Senate approved legislation today calling for the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq within a year, propelling Congress closer to an epic, wartime veto confrontation with Bush. (article 15) " Take a deep breath, Mr. President House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) said as she urged Bush to back away from threats to veto any war funding bill that sets dates for withdrawing U.S. forces from Iraq. (article 19) By a vote of 50 to 48, with a few crucial votes shifting in favor of the Democratic position, the Senate rejected a Republican effort to strip from the military spending bill any mention of a withdrawal date. (article 9)
