'Pathetic' Putting Takes a Toll on Woods (Sports, 14 articles)
For 27 summers, as the Kemper Open became the FBR Capital Open then finally devolved into Booz Allen Classic, local golf fans often wondered if having an annual pro golf event in Washington was really worth the effort. Woods came to Washington yesterday to formally announce his role as host of a new PGA Tour tournament, the AT&T National on July 5-8, an event that will bring top-flight golf back to the nation's capital. With nine holes left, Woods already had tied the tournament record of 18 under par and had a four-shot lead, aided by massive birdie putts of 40 feet at the sixth and eighth holes. MARANA, Ariz., Feb. 21 This was no stroll through the cactus in the dusty desert for Tiger Woods in the first round of the Accenture Match Play Championship on Wednesday. Four hours later, Woods needed that early cushion to hold off Wetterich at the final hole, winning by two shots and securing his sixth career title in eight starts in this elite-field, $8 million World Golf Championship event. MIAMI, March 21 Tiger Woods sounded more like a star-struck sports fan than the most dominant player at his own game Wednesday.

'Car of Tomorrow' Spawns Mild Case of Future Shock (Sports, 16 articles)
NASCAR officials discovered the crew chiefs' infractions, designed to give their cars an aerodynamic advantage, during an inspection after Sunday's qualifying session. The pace of change entering the 2007 season is dizzying even by NASCAR standards, enough so to raise concerns about turning off longtime fans in an effort to attract new ones. Waltrip claimed to be so remorseful that he had to be coaxed into returning to Daytona International Speedway to compete in Thursday's 150-mile qualifying races, which represented his last chance to earn a spot in NASCAR's biggest race.

JUPITER, Fla., March 7 While his bleary-eyed and road-weary teammates reluctantly stuffed jerseys and pants into their black equipment bags, pitcher Hayden Penn quickly, efficiently and eagerly packed for the trip here. No one on the bus was looking forward to Wednesday's exhibition game against the Florida Marlins more than Penn, the Baltimore Orioles prospect whose opportunities to crack the starting rotation have been met with disappointment. Last May, after being recalled from Class AAA Ottawa to replace Daniel Cabrera in the rotation, Penn was struck with appendicitis.
