Gonzales in 'uphill fight' to save job
Summary from United States, from articles in English
[UPDATED] (see summary with new information since yesterday)
Embattled U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Sunday he has done nothing improper in the firings of eight federal prosecutors in testimony prepared for his appearance before a Senate panel widely viewed as a last chance to save his job. (article 3) WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Gonzales conceded on Sunday he mishandled the dismissals of eight U.S. attorneys last year in one of several controversies swirling around President George Bush. (article 4) Two Republican senators said Gonzales has yet to shore up his credibility amid shifting explanations of his role in the dismissals. (article 1) In January 2006, when Justice Department officials began to discuss removing some United States attorneys, Ms. Brand was proposed as the top federal prosecutor in the Western District of Michigan, an e-mail message released on Friday shows. (article 6) My decision some months ago to privately seek the resignations of a small number of U.S. attorneys has erupted into a public firestorm. (article 9) Two of the replacement candidates named in the e-mail were later named to fill vacancies created by United States Attorneys who stepped down, suggesting that D. Kyle Sampson had a roster of preferred candidates to place in United States Attorneys' jobs. (article 7)
