Taliban ambush spurs Afghan battle

KABUL, Afghanistan - Taliban militants ambushed U.S.-led coalition forces, sparking a 10-hour battle and airstrikes that killed an estimated two dozen militants, the coalition said Monday. (article 2) The U.N. human-rights chief in Afghanistan said there were between 320 and 380 civilian deaths in military operations and militant violence in the first four months of the year. (article 2) Air Force Lt. Gen. Gary North noted that investigations into the attacks, in Herat province on April 27-29, and Helmand province on May 8, are still under way. (article 3) Regional officials of the U.S.-allied Afghan government said on May 2 that the Herat attacks killed at least 51 civilians, including women and children. (article 3) British troops using artillery, mortar and small arms fire destroyed a Taliban stronghold on the outskirts of Garmsir in Helmand province, Britain's Ministry of Defense said. (article 4) On Friday, a roadside bomb explosion killed a Canadian soldier during a joint Canadian-Afghan patrol in the Zhari district of Kandahar province. (article 4) The Taliban commander, detained in Nangarhar province by coalition forces and Afghan border police, headed a roadside bomb cell responsible for killing and injuring Afghans, the coalition said in a statement.
