The Seattle Times: Tensions rise in Kurdish area of Iraq
Summary from United States, from articles in English
[UPDATED] (see summary with new information since yesterday)
BAGHDAD - From south and north, Iraq's Kurdish region felt pressure from two sides Saturday, as saboteurs bombed a vital bridge link to Baghdad, and Turkish troops across the border massed for a possible strike. (article 4) A series of explosions were heard in Baghdad late Saturday and state-run Iraqiya television reported that U.S. warplanes were bombarding Habibiyah, a Shiite area on edge of the Mahdi Army militia stronghold of Sadr City. (article 4) Al-Maliki, the Shiite prime minister, ending a visit to the Kurdish north on Saturday, sought to ease the growing tensions. (article 4) BAGHDAD - Militants blew up a key bridge Saturday on a highway connecting Iraq's oil-rich north to Baghdad, in what locals warned was part of a campaign to stoke ethnic unrest in the volatile melting pot. (article 6) An American tank firing at insurgents near Falluja also killed three Iraqi children on Saturday, according to a military statement, and an American helicopter was damaged by gunfire north of Baghdad and forced to land. (article 5) BAGHDAD - A series of mortar barrages killed eight civilians and wounded 25 others early Saturday in a Sunni neighborhood in central Baghdad, police said, while a strategic bridge was damaged by a bomb in northern Iraq. (article 3)
