The Seattle Times: Ginseng, flaxseed show promise in tests
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
CHICAGO For the first time, doctors say they have found a pill that improves survival in liver cancer, a notoriously hard to treat disease diagnosed in more than half a million people globally each year. (article 3) The results in a multinational study of 602 patients with advanced liver cancer are impressive and likely will change the way patients are treated, cancer specialists including the study authors say. (article 3) Patients got either two tablets daily of a drug called sorafenib or dummy pills in the study, which started in March 2005. (article 3) CHICAGO - The first scientific tests of some popular alternative-medicine products hint that American ginseng might lessen cancer fatigue and that flaxseed might slow the growth of prostate tumors. (article 4) But the results suggest that some herbal remedies eventually may find niches for treating specific cancers, symptoms or side effects. (article 4) A US team at Rochester's Mayo Clinic found daily doses improved energy levels and emotional well-being, in a study of 282 patients. (article 5) They say that as studies show over half of cancer patients experience crippling fatigue, adding ginseng to cancer therapies is worth exploring. (article 5) Cancer fatigue is the most common side effect of cancer treatment and, according to Cancer Research UK, affects up to 90% of cancer patients. (article 5)
