Bush Proposes Goals on Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
[UPDATED] (see summary with new information since yesterday)
The call, in an open letter, comes as leaders of G8 most industrialised nations are to meet in Germany. (article 4) Mr. Bush wants to convene a series of meetings with the Greenhouse Gas 15, the largest emitters in the world, to "set a long-term global goal for reducing greenhouse gases" that would be effective after 2012. (article 2) " Joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. (article 8) This does not seem to be true on earth, however, at least if the penitent is George W. Bush and his repentance is over the administration's past recalcitrance on climate change. (article 8) British Prime Minister Tony Blair has welcomed US President George Bush's call for a global warming summit this year but said more was needed. (article 7) Bush said major polluters needed to set targets and "great breakthroughs" in technology - led by the US - would allow this to happen. (article 7) If carried through, such an agreement would be the first in which the United States, the world's biggest source of the emissions that scientists say are warming the planet, has committed itself to a specific target for cutting them. (article 1)
