The Seattle Times: Carbon-emissions culprit? Coal
Summary from United States, from articles in English
On Feb. 2, 2007, the United Nations scientific panel studying climate change declared that the evidence of a warming trend is "unequivocal and that human activity has" very likely " been the driving force in that change over the last 50 years. (article 1) The last report by the group, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in 2001, had found that humanity had "likely" played a role. (article 1) It also added new momentum to a debate that now seems centered less over whether humans are warming the planet, but instead over what to do about it. (article 1) -Wyoming's coal-fired power plants produce more carbon dioxide in just eight hours than the power generators of more populous Vermont do in a year. (article 2) -Texas, the leader in emitting this greenhouse gas, cranks out more than the next two biggest producers combined, California and Pennsylvania, which together have twice Texas' population. (article 2) "There's no question that some states have made choices to be greener than others said former top Energy Department official Joseph Romm, author of the new book" Hell and High Water " and executive director of a nonprofit energy-conservation group. (article 2)
