Henin v Kuznetsova as it happened (Sports, 19 articles) [UPDATE]
Top-seeded Justine Henin cruised to a second US Open and seventh Grand Slam title with a 6-1 6-3 victory over Fourth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova in Saturday's final. The Belgian went into the match with a 14-2 record against Kuznetsova, and having beaten Serena and Venus Williams in her last two matches. The Belgian won 6-1 6-3 to secure a second singles title at Flushing Meadows and the seventh Grand Slam crown of her career. NEW YORK This might not have been as thrilling as her 2003 U.S. Open title run, but Henin will happily take her second big women's single trophy home to Belgium. Henin, ranked and seeded No. 1, broke Kuznetsova's serve in the first game of the match and never looked back. The Henin-Williams match would mark the third consecutive Grand Slam the two would have faced each other in the quarters, with Henin winning at the French and Wimbledon. Williams had represented an intimidating 6-foot-1 tower of doubt, having defeated Henin in seven of their eight previous meetings. Kuznetsova, who won here in 2004, reached this year's final with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over No. 6 Anna Chakvetadze after recovering from an " embarrassing first set.

  • Johnson wins 6th race, earns Chase’s top seed (Sports, 7 articles) [UPDATE]
RICHMOND, Va. - Jimmie Johnson locked up his spot as the favorite for the Nextel Cup title, while Dale Earnhardt Jr. was locked out of NASCAR's showcase event. Johnson easily raced to his series-best sixth victory of the season, winning Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway to shore up the top seed in the Chase for the championship. Earnhardt will watch the Chase from the sidelines for the second time in three years, failing to race his way into the event.
D-Rays Rally Past Jays With 4-Run 9th (Sports, 5 articles)
Cincinnati scored six runs in the first inning, Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 593rd homer in the second and the Reds breezed to an 11-4 victory Friday night. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. B.J. Upton's pinch-hit two-run homer capped Tampa Bay's four-run rally in the ninth inning and lifted the Devil Rays to a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday night. Jonny Gomes drew a two-out walk before Upton, who was out of the starting lineup with a sore left ankle, hit the first pitch for the game-winning opposite-field homer to right.

  • Slack Israel make it too easy for England (Sports, 6 articles)
Micah Richards 'first England goal , Shaun Wright-Phillips' second and Michael Owen's 38th in 84 games were enough to see off outclassed Israel and ease Steve McClaren's Group E worries , for another few days at least. All three were quality strikes, the scorers offered a pleasing mix of youth and experience and this was certainly the most impressive England performance in a competitive game under McClaren. Every England player's name brought a deafening cheer, even Emile Heskey's , and there was a particularly approving roar for Steven Gerrard .
Glenn out for Cowboys' opener, maybe longer (Sports, 7 articles) [UPDATE]
Back when the Cowboys were counting on Greg Ellis to play in the opener, Wade Phillips used to reference Bruce Smith's performance in the 1996 season opener as proof that veteran pass rushers didn't need much preseason work. After missing all of training camp, Smith played 86 snaps and got a sack on the last one to set up a game-winning field goal to beat the Giants. Posted by Tim MacMahon at 12:09 AM (E-mail this entry) Comments (0) I hear Giants DE Michael Strahan is going to play Sunday night against the Cowboys.

PSU's Defense Bottles Up Fighting Irish (Sports, 4 articles)
STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Sept. 8 - From their storied histories to their classic uniforms to their high-profile coaches, Notre Dame and Penn State hold distinctive spots in college football lore. The 14th-ranked Nittany Lions bottled up Clausen in his starting debut, Williams had a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown and Austin Scott ran for two second-half scores in a 31-10 win Saturday night over the Irish. Most of the freshman's completions were on swing passes or screens as Coach Charlie Weis went conservative until midway through the fourth quarter.
Victory That’s Sure to Gain Attention for South Carolina (Sports, 4 articles)
ATHENS, Ga., Sept. 8 - The players are starting to take on the persona of their coach , Steve Spurrier, and have an ever so subtle swagger. Georgia has the best record in the SEC the last six seasons, so South Carolina's victory is a signal that South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier is making progress with a program long considered humdrum. The ol ball coach, who beat the Bulldogs regularly while at Florida, guided South Carolina to a 16-12 upset of No. 11 Georgia on Saturday night, signaling the Gamecocks as a possible title contender in the Southeastern Conference.

Stricker, Baddeley share BMW lead; Woods looms (Sports, 7 articles) [UPDATE]
Along with being a Nike client since turning pro, Tiger Woods has endorsed everything from automobiles to financial services to watches to video games. LEMONT, Illinois (Reuters) - American Steve Stricker and Australian Aaron Baddeley birdied the final hole to move one shot clear of Tiger Woods after the BMW Championship third round on Saturday. " A lot of things went Stricker told reporters.
Cricket: Mighty Tendulkar forced to bow out with a look back in anger (Sports, 5 articles)
We came to pay homage to the Little Master, perhaps the finest batsman of his generation and the man who reminded Sir Donald Bradman of himself. Brian Lara in his last game - against England at the Kensington Oval in April - was undermined by the brainless running between the wickets of Marlon Samuels and condemned to finish his West Indies career with a mundane 18. Seventh one-day international, Lord's: England 188-3 (36.2 overs) bt India 187 (47.3 overs) by seven wickets.

A Week Later, Appalachian Is Still Celebrating (Sports, 4 articles)
Small-time football returned to Appalachian State on Saturday, a week after the Mountaineers ventured onto the national stage and humbled Michigan in front of nearly 110,000 at Michigan Stadium. It was quite a turnout, considering that the student population is about 15,000 and that the town totals another 13,000 or so. And all around, even before a 48-7 victory against Lenoir-Rhyne from nearby Hickory, there was a joyous anticipation of a season that is already unlike any other experienced in this Blue Ridge Mountains town.
Familiar failings plague Irish and it's win or bust in Prague (Sports, 4 articles)
It was a major physical confrontation when my former Queens, University of Ulster, Ireland and British and Irish Lions colleague David Irwin and I played against each other. A week after that, we were on an Irish team working with those same players we had previously been playing against as we competed against the might of England, Scotland or Wales. Given how tight Group F is, the Irish probably need to win against Iceland on Wednesday to keep their campaign alive.

In Season Opener, Defense Shines for the Colts (Sports, 6 articles) [UPDATE]
INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 7 - The play came midway through the first quarter of the N.F.L.'s first regular-season game, but for the Colts defense, what happened could serve as a portent for a burgeoning power. By the end of Thursday night's game, they and the rest of the league had learned even more about the Colts' defense, by way of a 41-10 thrashing. Nothing - not even baseball waking from its winter slumber - approaches the level of anticipation the start of the NFL season does.
Rice Rushes to a Rutgers Record in a Sloppy Victory Over Navy (Sports, 4 articles)
PISCATAWAY, N.J., Sept. 7 (AP) - It took Ray Rice only two carries against Navy to become Rutgers's career leading rusher. The 15th-ranked Scarlet Knights had to work a lot longer and needed some big plays from their defense to finally put away from the stubborn Midshipmen. Rice set a Rutgers rushing record and Mike Teel threw three touchdown passes, but Rutgers Coach Greg Schiano could not have been overjoyed with the Knights 41-24 victory over Navy on Friday night.
