|
DETROIT (Reuters) - The Detroit Tigers ended a hectic 24 hours with two wins from three games but ultimately made little progress in their American League wild card chase on Tuesday. The rookie right-hander allowed one run over five innings to lead the Tigers to a 4-1 victory over the Texas Rangers and a split of Tuesday's day-night doubleheader. Alex Rodriguez's home run tear is carrying the Yankees toward the playoffs und and one of their chief competitors just lost a key pitcher to injury. The surging Yankees, who have won five in a row, extended their AL wild-card lead to four games over Detroit. DETROIT - Ichiro Suzuki scored in each of the first four innings and the Seattle Mariners busted out of a long slump, beating the Detroit Tigers 14-7 on Sunday for only their second victory in 15 games. Raul Ibanez hit a three-run homer, Adrian Beltre had four RBIs and Jose Guillen drove in three runs for Seattle, which began the day five games behind the New York Yankees in the AL wild-card race.

|
The Washington Wizards shot 51 percent, received a terrific all-around game from center Etan Thomas and had all five starters score in double figures, while holding one of the game's brightest stars below his scoring average. The Wizards (39-39) once again were in position to pull out a victory, but couldn't make the key plays down the stretch against a Heat team that was without Shaquille O'Neal .
