Time Warner's AOL to buy global social media network Bebo for $850 M in cash
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
NEW YORK - AOL, the Internet arm of Time Warner Inc., said Thursday it will pay US$850 million in cash to acquire social media network Bebo, which has total global membership of more than 40 million. (article 8) Bebo is one of the largest social networks in Britain, and is ranked number one in Ireland and New Zealand and number three in the U.S, according to AOL. (article 8) AOL stepped up its bid to boost traffic and advertising opportunities worldwide as the struggling Internet company agreed Thursday to pay $850 million for the online hangout Bebo and a foothold in the growing arena of social media. (article 7) Thursday's $850m acquisition of Bebo marked the latest investment he has had to make to redefine AOL's business model. (article 9) A year and a half ago, when takeover rumours were circling Bebo, founder Michael Birch said $1bn was "a ridiculous amount of money" for the company. (article 12) Ron Grant, AOL's president and chief operating officer, said the deal should help AOL expand internationally and Bebo grow in the United States. (article 6) Thursday's $850m purchase of Bebo by AOL provided a rare data point for industry-watchers who are trying to determine how much fast-growing social networks are worth. (article 11)
