Bush intervention led EPA to scale back ozone limits
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
The documents depict a series of tense exchanges between the EPA and the White House Office of Management and Budget during the days before the new smog air quality standard was announced Wednesday. (article 8) Friday, March 14, 2008 (03-14) 04:00 PDT Washington The Environmental Protection Agency weakened one part of its new limits on smog-forming ozone after an unusual, last-minute intervention by President Bush, according to documents released by the EPA. (article 5) EPA officials estimated that by 2030 the health benefits associated with the new standards will outweigh the costs by 20 to 1, preventing 1,500 premature deaths and 1,100 hospitalizations a year. (article 12) That's exactly what happened Wednesday, when EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson limited the allowable level of ozone - the air pollutant that triggers smog - to 75 parts per billion. (article 3) Johnson told reporters that he had " made the most health-protective eight-hour ozone decision in the nation's history. (article 3) The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the US is tightening air quality standards in an effort to help improve public health. (article 6) WASHINGTON - The air in hundreds of U.S. counties is simply too dirty to breathe, the government said Wednesday, ordering a multibillion-dollar expansion of efforts to clean up smog in cities and towns nationwide. (article 7)
