Gaza Rockets Barrage Southern Israel
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
The new violence highlighted the fragility of efforts to move Israel and Gaza's Islamic Hamas rulers toward an informal truce. (article 1) The Islamic Jihad commander Mohammed Shehadeh was buried Thursday in the West Bank town of Bethlehem along with three other gunmen killed in the raid late Wednesday. (article 1) Cheney left Sunday on a 10-day trip that includes visits to Oman, Saudi Arabia, Israel, the Palestinian territories and Turkey. (article 5) His trip coincides with the fifth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, which has tainted the U.S. image in the Mideast and changed the balance of power in the region. (article 5) Cheney is the latest top U.S. official to go the Mideast to coax Israel and moderate Palestinian leaders to move forward on a peace deal. (article 5) His declaration embraces the essential provisions of the Geneva Accord, a model peace agreement - drafted in 2003 by Israeli and Palestinian political, diplomatic, and intellectual leaders - that definitively addresses all the "core issues" of the conflict. (article 6) The US envoy appointed to monitor the stalled peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians has held his first meeting with the two sides. (article 7) The Israelis and Palestinians agreed to relaunch peace efforts when they met at a conference in the US in November. (article 7)
