Airstrikes Kill 9 in Pakistan Region That Harbors Militants
Summary from United States, from articles in English
Three bombs, apparently dropped by an American aircraft, killed nine people and wounded nine others on Sunday in the tribal area of South Waziristan that provides sanctuary to Al Qaeda and the Taliban, a Pakistani security official said. (article 2) Many Pakistanis, including politicians in the two parties that will form a new coalition government this week, believe that the suicide bombings are carried out as retaliation for the American strikes. (article 2) PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN A missile strike today destroyed the compound of a suspected militant leader in Pakistan's tribal belt, killing at least 18 people, according to officials and local residents. (article 3) American military officials in neighboring Afghanistan had no immediate comment on the strike, though U.S. troops are believed to have carried out several similar attacks in recent months. (article 3) The U.S. military acknowledged responsibility for a cross-border missile strike last week that killed four Pakistani civilians, saying the attack had been aimed at militant leaders. (article 3) Missiles that witnesses say came from an unmanned drone flattened a suspected militant safehouse Sunday in Pakistan's tribal area along the Afghan border. (article 4) Witnesses said a drone dropped seven missiles on the sprawling, mud-brick compound about three miles outside Wana, the main town in South Waziristan. (article 4)
