Clinton Treats Obama Pastor With Extreme Caution (U.S., 43 articles)
On Tuesday, Obama addressed it head-on in a speech that bluntly described a history of injustice to blacks, acknowledged the resentments of whites, and ended with the hope that his campaign can help heal racial divisions. Even if Hillary Rodham Clinton and her aides do not mention Barack Obama's fiery-tongued spiritual mentor, don't expect the Illinois senator's well-publicized speech Tuesday to make the controversy disappear, political strategists said this week. In the annals of American history, a watershed moment should come from " A More Perfect Union Sen. Barack Obama's powerful speech linking 221 years of race relations. Senator Obama said he understood the history of anger between black and white Americans but that the US could not afford to ignore race issues. The Illinois senator is using a speech at a site near the nation's birthplace to present what his campaign said would be a comprehensive take on " race, politics, and unifying our country. Senator Barack Obama renewed his objection to the controversial statements delivered by the longtime pastor of his Chicago church, but declared in a speech here Tuesday that it was time for America to " move beyond some of our old racial wounds.

Bush insists Iraq war was a success as bin Laden threatens Europe on anniversary (World, 16 articles)
Analysts say the 4,000 dead, while an arbitrary marker, could inject the war debate back into the campaign season, particularly with the war's fifth anniversary on Thursday. WASHINGTON - President Bush defiantly defended the Iraq war Wednesday as U.S. troops began a sixth year of combat in the long and costly conflict that has dominated his presidency. There is a hillside full of crosses near the BART station in Lafayette, and the occasional war protest in Berkeley or San Francisco makes the papers and the television news.

Israeli offensive boosts Hamas in Gaza (World, 13 articles)
Hamas, the Islamist Palestinian group, has emerged from the recent Israeli offensive against its stronghold in the Gaza Strip more deeply entrenched and with broader public backing than before, according to independent analysts and a poll published this week. Olmert's public stance on continuing construction in disputed areas threatened to further weaken moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who is in a power struggle with the militant Islamic Hamas group that governs Gaza. Israeli-Palestinian peace talks resumed Monday in Jerusalem after a break of several weeks because of a spike in violence, but the session ended in discord.
