Pittsburgh and the Canadiens have five games to play in the regular season, one less than the Devils, whose four-game winless streak (0-3-1) matches their season high. Malone got his sixth goal of the season against New Jersey at 5:18 of the first period with Patrik Elias off for interference. New Jersey, in the playoffs for the 11th straight season, trails Pittsburgh by five points with three games to play, and has a two-point edge over the New York Rangers in the East chase. By MARK EVERSON April 1, 2008 The season ends Sunday and the Devils, who spent 21/2 months atop the division, still haven't clinched a playoff berth. By TIM BONTEMPS March 24, 2008 Heading into the first half of their home-and-home with the Penguins in Pittsburgh Saturday night, the Devils had big visions for their final eight games of the season. Now the Devils find themselves in the middle of a three-game losing streak, and have failed to score more than one goal in a game for more than a week. Their third straight ugly victory, a 3-2 shootout triumph over the Bruins in Newark last night, put the Devils back in business after their five-game losing streak.

Nowitzki scored 18 points in his unexpected start Wednesday night after missing four games with a high ankle sprain and helped the Mavericks beat the Golden State Warriors 118-86. With the win, Dallas, seventh in the Western Conference, moved a full game ahead of idle Denver and two games ahead of Golden State. The 111-89 blowout of Golden State on Wednesday night was a stunning reversal for a squad that had gone 0-10 against winning teams since acquiring Jason Kidd and slid down the playoff standings in March.

Thomas Says He's Not Talking to Hoosiers (Sports, 9 articles)
Thomas, whose Knicks have lost seven of eight and 14 of 16, has a 53-102 record in two seasons with the team. That's the task facing the New York native, who returned home Wednesday to become president of basketball operations for the Knicks. An NBA source told ESPN.com on Wednesday that the Knicks yielded to Walsh's wishes on several key terms regarding authority and autonomy in reaching agreement on a four-year deal that installs Walsh as the new team president.

Seven batters were hit by pitches during the opening series between the Cubs and Brewers, and Milwaukee's Rickie Weeks who was hit twice Monday leveled Cubs catcher Geovany Soto on a play at the plate in the first inning Thursday. Players in both clubhouses of the division rivals said there was no extracurricular motivation, including Soto, who was in the baseline without the ball when Weeks hit him. CHICAGO - Incessant talk of the 100-year anniversary of the Chicago Cubs' last World Series title already has grown old and really has nothing to do with their 0-2 start in 2008.

By BART HUBBUCH April 3, 2008 MIAMI - Late word yesterday that Pedro Martinez will miss 4-6 weeks with a mild hamstring strain actually amounted to good news for the Mets. The Amazin's were prepared for potentially much worse after Martinez heard a pop in his hamstring just 57 pitches into his regular-season debut Tuesday night against the Marlins. The three-time Cy Young winner hurt his hamstring in the fourth inning of Tuesday's 10-inning loss on a pitch to Marlins catcher Matt Treanor.

Avram Grant's managerial credentials were given a further savaging by a former Chelsea player yesterday, with Mateja Kezman claiming that Fenerbahçe would not have achieved their Champions League victory on Wednesday had their opponents still been managed by Jose Mourinho. Grant's standing has been undermined by the 2-1 defeat in Istanbul, with his position to be reviewed after the second leg of the quarter-final at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. While Abramovich is desperate for Grant to be a success and would like to give his friend at least one more season to prove himself, the prospect of him surviving cup defeats by Tottenham Hotspur, Barnsley and Fenerbahçe is remote.

Basketball, NCAA Tournament, Boston Bruins - (Sports, 4 articles)
UCLA's numbers in the NCAA tournament are skewed by the team's opening-round rout of No. 16 seed Mississippi Valley State, which scored only 29 points. Of course, the Bruins haven't faced a team as explosive as the Tigers (37-1), who have averaged 85 points in the NCAA tournament. As if his players needed reminding, Howland often goes into a defensive stance in the coaching box, crouching and waving his arms as his necktie flaps.
