Bush Defies Calls for Faster Withdrawal of Iraq Troops (World, 58 articles)
WASHINGTON - The recommendation by the top U.S. commander in Iraq to suspend troop reductions reflects a bleak assessment that Iraqi forces remain unprepared to take over the mission of securing their nation, senior administration and military officials said Wednesday. Though most Democrats refused to acknowledge it, Petraeus detailed how the troop surge begun last year has succeeded beyond expectation, and that the threat from Iranian-backed terrorists within Iraq has been " reduced significantly. To avoid that, nearly everyone also agrees that some combat forces should remain in Iraq to fight foreign insurgents, to train the Iraqi army and police, and to protect remaining American troops, diplomats and contractors.

Obama adviser likens Clinton to McCarthy :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Nation (U.S., 36 articles)
Mrs. Clinton won a close race in New Jersey, where voters said that the economy was the most important issue in deciding how to cast their vote, according to exit polls. Democratic primary voters overwhelmingly said that a candidate's ability to bring about needed change was the most important factor in the way they voted, and those voters supported Mr. Obama in large numbers. The state has 4.5 million registered voters, and in a measure of the interest the race has drawn, officials said that 93,000 people signed up in the five weeks before the Jan. 7 deadline for participation in the primary.

American Airlines cancels 29 O'Hare flights :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Transportation (U.S., 47 articles)
The cancellation of thousands of flights this week will cost American Airlines tens of millions of dollars, the company's chief executive said Thursday, but he said the nation's largest carrier can withstand the losses. More than 100,000 air travelers across the nation wrestled with flight cancellations, long lines and ruined vacation plans Wednesday as American Airlines continued to ground planes for maintenance inspections and said more disruptions were coming in the days ahead. April 9, 2008 American Airlines canceled about 500 flights yesterday to check the bundling of wires in some planes, the same issue that caused the airline to scrap more than 400 flights last month.
