Dalai Lama renews calls for China to withdraw troops, stop Tibet suppression (World, 35 articles)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A boycott of Olympic ceremonies by world leaders over China's crackdown in Tibet would be an evasion of responsibility and less effective than quiet diplomacy, the U.S. national security adviser said on Sunday. Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and Republican candidate John McCain have said Bush should consider an opening-ceremony boycott. The Dalai Lama said Sunday that Tibet cannot make any more concessions to China and renewed his calls for the government to cease suppression in his former homeland and withdraw troops.

Barack Obama's 'guns and religion' blunder gives Hillary Clinton a chance (U.S., 48 articles)
The nation's system of public financing for presidential elections is "creaky" and needs to be updated, Sen. Barack Obama said Friday, offering another possible argument for not accepting taxpayer dollars to pay for his presidential campaign. Obama, who has raised a whopping $234 million from about 1.3 million donors, said the limited amounts of money available from the federal treasury for presidential campaigns pose difficult choices for candidates raising large sums. A political tempest over Barack Obama's comments about bitter voters in small towns has given rival Hillary Clinton a new opening to court working-class Democrats 10 days before Pennsylvanians hold a primary that she must win to keep her presidential campaign alive.

Iraq and U.S. to pressure Iran with diplomacy, force (World, 21 articles)
WASHINGTON - With Al Qaeda's influence diminishing in Iraq, U.S. troops have much work to do in stemming Iranian support for militias, President Bush's national security adviser said Sunday. Last year, Gates said he was holding out hope that the U.S. presence in Iraq could drop to about 10 brigades - or roughly 100,000 troops - by the end of this year. President Bush said Thursday that the senior United States commander in Iraq could "have all the time he needs" before reducing American forces there any further, but he promised shorter tours for troops and longer breaks for them at home.

Final cost of American Airlines' lost flights still up in the air (U.S., 28 articles)
American Airlines canceled more than 1,000 flights last week, at least one-third of its schedule, spending several days inspecting the wiring on some of its jets - the same issue that caused it to scrub hundreds of flights two weeks ago. American Airlines canceled 595 flights Friday, but said it expected to be operating 60 percent of its MD-80 flights by 4 p.m. The carrier has canceled at least 185 flights for Friday at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. On Thursday, American Airlines chairman and chief executive officer Gerard Arpey said that he is taking "personal responsibility" for the botched maintenance that has forced the carrier to cancel flights this week for aircraft inspections.
