PM urges world food prices action
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
The prime minister said global food prices were at their highest since 1945 and tackling hunger was "a moral challenge" for everyone. (article 2) The United Nations secretary general says the world must urgently increase food production to ease skyrocketing prices and has pledged to set up a task force on a crisis threatening to destabilize developing nations. (article 8) The International Monetary Fund on Monday gave its starkest warning about the impact of rising commodities, saying food and oil prices "risk becoming a destabilising force in the global economy". (article 1) Rick Wagoner, General Motors chairman and chief executive, has dismissed United Nations research that links biofuel production to rising food prices as "shockingly misinformed". (article 7) The blunt assessment by the head of the world's largest car company reinvigorates intense debate about ostensible social costs and environmental benefits of biofuels, a burgeoning industry some analysts say crowds out food production. (article 7) The secretary-general is just the latest to sound the growing alarm over the effect that rising food prices is having around the world. (article 9) Urgent action to help the world's poorest farmers help themselves would make a significant contribution to tackling the global food crisis in a single growing season, according to Jeffrey Sachs (article 10)
