Clinton scores vital win over Obama in Pennsylvania contest (U.S., 117 articles)
|
To take one example, only 50 percent of Democratic Catholic voters who attend church weekly said they would vote for Mr. Obama in a general election; 25 percent said would vote for Mr. McCain. " Hillary Clinton was once again able to win one of the key Democratic states that we need to win in the general election said Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe in an interview on CNN. White voters who said race was a factor supported Clinton over Obama by 3-to-1, while whites who said race wasn't a factor divided between Clinton and Obama more evenly. Fifty four percent chose the economy as the most important issue, compared to 28 percent who said the war in Iraq and 14 percent who said health care. Barack Obama says his rival Hillary Clinton will likely win Tuesday's Pennsylvania primary, the largest of the last few contests in the race to become the Democratic presidential candidate, but not by much. By a margin of 53 percent to 41 percent, those surveyed said it is more important that their favorite candidate win, even if the race goes into the summer, than that the race end as soon as possible.

BAGHDAD Iraqi troops backed by U.S. forces battled Shiite fighters in Baghdad's Sadr City neighborhood in clashes that killed 20 people and wounded more than 50 despite a cease-fire between the government and the militia, officials said Sunday. Confrontations once more jolted Sadr City, the Shiite Muslim district in Baghdad where the U.S. military said its forces fired a Hellfire missile that hit a car carrying militants and rockets. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki issued the order after al-Sadr, whose Mahdi Army militia fought government troops a week ago in Basra and elsewhere, hinted at retaliation if Iraqi security forces continue to arrest his followers.

Bank of America profit down 77% on bad loans (Finance, 12 articles)

The changes affect home loans once common at Countrywide, which agreed in January to a $4-billion takeover by the nation's second-largest bank after borrower defaults soared and credit markets tightened. US bank failures could rise above "historical norms" as a weakening economy puts pressure on badly underwritten loans, particularly in commercial real estate, according to a bank regulator. The central bank on Tuesday announced the results of its most recent auction und the 10th since the program started in December, where commercial banks bid to get a slice of another $50 billion in the short-term loans.
