Clinton scores vital win over Obama in Pennsylvania contest (U.S., 93 articles)
The polls, conducted by Edison/Mitofsky for the five television networks and The Associated Press, asked voters if the race of the candidate was important: 19 percent said yes, while 80 percent said no. To take one example, only 60 percent of Democratic Catholic voters said they would vote for Mr. Obama in a general election; 21 percent said they would vote for Mr. McCain, exit polls show. Senator Hillary Clinton won in Pennsylvania by appealing to her core supporters: white voters, blue collar voters, female voters and voters over the age of 60. " Hillary Clinton was once again able to win one of the key Democratic states that we need to win in the general election said Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe in an interview on CNN. Barack Obama says his rival Hillary Clinton will likely win Tuesday's Pennsylvania primary, the largest of the last few contests in the race to become the Democratic presidential candidate, but not by much. With six weeks left and nine primary contests after Tuesday's vote in Pennsylvania, Mrs Clinton would need to raise at least $30m to $40m to keep her campaign going, say analysts.

  • Australian torch relay ends with minor skirmishes (World, 18 articles)
The presence of over 500 police and a steel fence sealing off parts of the city meant that Canberra's Olympic torch relay passed off smoothly. The Olympic torch made its way through the Australian capital Canberra on Thursday amid tight security and protesters in the final leg of its beleaguered journey around the globe to Beijing. The Olympic flame arrived in Australia today for the next leg of the torch relay and was immediately whisked away to a secret location to avoid anti-China protesters.

  • Sam's Club, Costco limit rice purchases as prices rise (U.S., 11 articles)
Sam's Club, the US discount warehouse retailer owned by Wal-Mart, has begun restricting purchases of bulk bags of imported rice, amid growing anxieties among small restaurant owners and others over rising global food costs. On Wednesday, Sam's Club said customers would no longer be allowed to purchase more than four bags of jasmine, basmati or long-grain white rice on each visit. The moves come as U.S. rice futures hit a record high on global food inflation, although one rice expert said the warehouse chains may be reacting more to stockpiling by restaurants and small stores than to shortages.
