Syria open to talks with Israel — once Bush leaves
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
Assad's comments to the al-Watan newspaper of Qatar acknowledged the likelihood of heavy opposition to such talks within the U.S. government and among Israeli hawks, who value the Golan's strategic heights as a buffer against possible Syrian hostilities. (article 3) Golan Heights community leaders on Thursday urged Turkey to continue advancing peace talks between Israel and Syria without conditioning negotiations on an Israeli withdrawal from the contentious region. (article 1) In a letter to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Golan leaders asked the advancement of talks be based on the same model used by Turkey and Syria to resolve its dispute over Hatay - a region annexed by Ankara in 1939. (article 1) BEIRUT, Lebanon - A Cabinet minister said Wednesday that Israel has passed a message to Syria saying it is prepared to return the Golan Heights in exchange for a peace treaty. (article 5) Israeli officials declined to comment on the report, but the message could be a sign of progress in back-channel contacts that the two nations have reported in recent days. (article 5) Syrian Emigrant Affairs Minister Buthaina Shaaban told satellite television Al-Jazeera that the message from Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was relayed to Syrian President Bashar Assad by Turkey's leader. (article 5)
