The topics I choose represent the things in which I take an interest, and I try to deal with them the way most folks would, sometimes seriously, sometimes with a sense of humor. Kevin Rudd Australia, covered himself with glory early this month by telling the Chinese leadership that China's behaviour in Tibet raised human rights issues. He said that Australia recognised China's sovereignty over Tibet, which you might think was still an issue in itself for some Tibetans, but at least he had said something. It isn't at all clear that the world can be said to exist - the world only partly includes South Africa, for example " Hear Radio 4's A Point of View

HPV-related oral cancers rise among younger men - (Science/Technology, 8 articles)
The sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer in women has now been linked to an uptick of throat, tonsil and tongue cancers - in a younger and healthier group of patients than doctors have ever seen before. These head and neck cancers were once the scourge of older men - mostly the result of lifetimes of heavy smoking and drinking. Scientists from the University of Louisville, Kentucky found that although smoking is the No. 1 cause of lung cancer, viruses may also play a part.
Increases in methane and carbon dioxide of particular concern (Science/Technology, 6 articles)
p (04-24) 04:00 PDT Washington - Major greenhouse gases in the air are accumulating faster than in the past despite efforts to curtail their growth. Carbon dioxide concentration in the air increased by 2.4 parts per million last year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported Wednesday, and methane concentrations also rose rapidly. The finding, reported in the journal Nature Geoscience, relies on ancient Antarctic ice bubbles that contain air samples going back 610,000 years.

A Google Prototype for a Precision Image Search (Science/Technology, 4 articles)
Google researchers say they have a software technology intended to do for digital images on the Web what the company's original PageRank software did for searches of Web pages. On Thursday at the International World Wide Web Conference in Beijing, two Google scientists presented a paper describing what the researchers call VisualRank, an algorithm for blending image-recognition software methods with techniques for weighting and ranking images that look most similar. Although image search has become popular on commercial search engines, results are usually generated today by using cues from the text that is associated with each image.
