S.F. Ballet's 75th anniversary celebration begins (Entertainment, 6 articles)
|
P With pomp and circumstance and dripping with rain - and diamonds, too - patrons of the San Francisco Ballet celebrated the dance company's 75th anniversary Wednesday night. The world-famous company, led by Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson, drew some drew some 1,375 guests to a formal dinner at City Hall - about 500 more guests than years past, owing to the landmark event. The gala, one of the primary dates on the city's social calendar, is the ballet's primary fundraiser of the year. In the Rotunda, pale hues and tables laden with wintry branches decked in shimmering white snowflakes made for a festive diamond anniversary theme. P It's tempting to treat San Francisco Ballet's gargantuan New Works Festival as a sporting event: 10 choreographers unveiling 10 world premieres over three days. Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson's daring onslaught of fresh work invites a heightened, even heated dialogue - and this, more than the sheer number of premieres, is what the ballet world needs now. Boston Ballet has 50 dancers - 10 principal dancers, the highest level; 10 soloists, the next level; 4 second soloists; and the rest in the corps de ballet.
