Jameer Nelson scored 12 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, and Hedo Turkoglu had 18 points and nine rebounds for the third-seeded Magic. Chris Paul had 19 points and 12 assists for the Hornets, Morris Peterson scored 19 points and David West had 18 points and 11 rebounds. The high-flying Smith scored 27 points and the Hawks earned their first playoff victory since 1999, beating the Celtics 102-93 Saturday night to cut Boston's lead in the series to 2-1. The Detroit Pistons roared back in the second half and regained home-court advantage by beating Philadelphia 93-84 to square their NBA playoff series at two games apiece. Andre Miller was spot on with his mid-range jumper and scored 21 points, and the rest of the Sixers ran all over the court in a dominating 95-75 victory Friday night to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round series. Samuel Dalembert had 22 points and 16 rebounds, and the Sixers led by as many as 24 points in their first home playoff game since 2005.

  • Ravens Central: Ravens made big offer to Rams for No. 2 pick (Sports, 10 articles)
In essence, to move up six spots in the first round, Baltimore was offering the 38th and 106th pick this year and, say, around the 80th pick next year. If St. Louis traded with Atlanta, the Rams would pick up a free first-day pick and still get Chris Long. Thwarted in their bid to trade up and draft Boston College's Matt Ryan, the Ravens worked a pair of deals to get the second-best quarterback on their board: Joe Flacco.

P (04-27) 23:22 PDT SAN JOSE What the Sharks are asked to do - win a series after hurling away the first two games at home - is not without precedent. Brad Richards of Dallas tied the score after a San Jose turnover in the opening minute of the third period, and Niklas Hagman added two insurance goals in the Stars' eighth victory in their last nine games in San Jose. Roenick had two goals and two assists, including the tying and go-ahead scores midway through the Sharks' four-goal second period in a 5-3 victory over the Calgary Flames in Game 7, finishing their first-round playoff series.

  • TIME FOR DEVILS AND LAMORIELLO TO OPEN WALLET (Sports, 6 articles)
By MARK EVERSON April 1, 2008 The season ends Sunday and the Devils, who spent 21/2 months atop the division, still haven't clinched a playoff berth. By MARK EVERSON March 22, 2008 While the Islanders glimpsed hope for their future, the Devils were haunted again by the specter of scoring famine that threatens to undo their present. The Devils' familiar failing gave 19-year-old Islander hope Kyle Okposo the stage to snap a 1-1 tie with his first NHL goal in his second game with only 3:35 left.

Whatever the motivation, the expansion Ironmen are facing a now-or-never scenario against a team that leads the MISL in virtually every defensive category - against shots per game and points per game, and in power-play defensive average. Machel Millwood, who had a hat trick and eight points in the opener and has amassed 21 points in five games against New Jersey, is anticipating the away game. After scoring his third goal midway through the third quarter, Cabral leaped up and climbed atop the protective glass lining the indoor field, raised his arm in triumph and kissed the Blast logo on his red uniform.

Raiders release RB Rhodes after taking McFadden in draft (Sports, 8 articles)
P 04-28) 15:44 PDT Alameda, Calif. (AP) The Oakland Raiders released running back Dominic Rhodes on Monday, two days after using their top draft pick to take big-play back Darren McFadden. The Raiders still have two backs with 1,000-yard seasons on their roster in Justin Fargas and LaMont Jordan, as well as last year's fourth-round pick Michael Bush. He restructured his contract earlier this offseason and was expected to share the rushing load with Fargas before McFadden was drafted.

  • Lakers complete playoff sweep of Nuggets (Sports, 5 articles)
Kobe Bryant scored 14 of his 31 points over the final 5 1/2 minutes Monday night, leading the Lakers to a 107-101 victory over the Nuggets and a sweep of their Western Conference quarter-final. Every chance he gets, Los Angeles Lakers guard Coby Karl razzes his dad, Denver Nuggets coach George Karl, suggesting he 'll win an NBA title before his father ever does. " Today is not a day for trash-talking Coby said as he prepared for the Lakers' practice at the Pepsi Center, followed by dinner with dad.

News for Dallas, Texas (Sports, 4 articles)
IRVING - You don't draft a complementary player in the first round when you have an opportunity to select a franchise back. By drafting Felix Jones instead of Rashard Mendenhall, the Cowboys finished Day 1 of the NFL draft with a good haul instead of a phenomenal one after also selecting South Florida cornerback Mike Jenkins and Texas A&M tight end Martellus Bennett. Picking Jones over Mendenhall reminded me of the Cowboys' ill-fated 1995 draft decision to pick a bunch of backups because their roster was so talented.
Nelson says there's no problem, Davis says very little (Sports, 4 articles)
P (04-17) 21:46 PDT Hours before the season came to a quiet close, Chris Mullin leaned back in a courtside seat at Oracle Arena and delivered his impromptu end-of-year address. Look-ahead time had arrived, and asked if he believed that Golden State had shifted toward becoming Monta Ellis' team, Mullin offered a decisive "No.". The 48-win campaign that brought the Warriors' oh-so-close to the playoffs this season was not defined by the power of one, but the power of three.

Loyola settles part of suit filed by ex-coach Dirrigl - (Sports, 4 articles)
The Eastern College Athletic Conference men's lacrosse title has belonged to Georgetown for six of the past eight years, but Loyola moved one step closer to cutting into the Hoyas' reign yesterday at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. Greyhounds coach Charley Toomey said in addition to Koppens' explosiveness, one of the keys to the game was grabbing 33 ground balls, compared to 30 for Georgetown. Shane Koppens had five points (two goals and three assists) as No. 19 Loyola beat visiting Rutgers, 15-3, at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field yesterday.
Pats' focus has them in the clear - (Sports, 4 articles)
Finger flipped to all who dared question the legitimacy of their accomplishments, even while the actions of their organization raised those questions... tucked neatly back into their palms. The Patriots are one victory away from becoming legends, and plenty are treating this as a foregone conclusion, with the event at University of Phoenix Stadium being more of a coronation than a game. The Colts are at Tennessee on Monday, Oct. 27 in what is usually a physical AFC South clash then must turn around host the Patriots in a Sunday night contest.

Puyallup's Ryan Moore loses to Scott in playoff (Sports, 9 articles)
Woods' last birdie on the par-3 ninth was a bending putt from just inside 25 feet that looked remarkably similar minus the hat-spiking celebration to his winning putt five days ago at Bay Hill that kept him undefeated since September. Adam Scott made a 9-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to force a playoff, then made a 48-footer playing it again on the third playoff hole to beat Ryan Moore in the EDS Byron Nelson Championship yesterday in Irving, Texas. Playing the 18th hole for the third time in less than an hour, the second time in the playoff, Scott hit his tee shot into a fairway bunker to the right.
Kyle Busch wins at Talladega (Sports, 8 articles)
TALLADEGA, Ala. Kyle Busch fell a lap down midway through the race, and after racing his way back into contention, needed an awesome save to keep himself from triggering a massive crash. The kid who couldn't conquer Talladega finally won at the harrowing track Sunday, and in this breakout season for Busch, it was only fitting that he coasted to the victory. Busch came back from a lap down for his first win at Talladega, which was won under caution when a 12-car accident brought out the yellow flag on the final lap.

Canadiens want an end to post-whistle activity (Sports, 7 articles)
April 27, 2008 R.J. Umberger scored twice, Martin Biron made 34 saves and the Flyers beat the Canadiens 4-2 last night in Montreal to even the second-round series at a game apiece. Don Cherry will announce the three finalists for the 2008 Jack Adams Award, given annually to the NHL's top head coach as judged by the NHL Broadcasters' Association, during Coach's Corner on Wednesday night. The first two games of the series have seen a steady escalation in post-whistle activity, culminating in the Tom Kostopoulos sucker punch heard around the world on Kimmo Timonen near the end of Game 2.
Washington Wizards centre says James should stop complaining (Sports, 7 articles)
Following Cleveland's 100-97 win in Game 4 on Sunday, James, who has absorbed two flagrant fouls in this rough-and-tumble playoff series and has been banged around by the Wizards, was asked about Washington's tough-guy tactics. Little came easily, and his simmering feud with Washington guard DeShawn Stevenson nearly bubbled over late in the second quarter. James drove to the basket, and Stevenson came from behind and swiped a hand out, missing the ball but clipping the Cavs' star in the head.

Kentucky Derby puzzle gets more complicated (Sports, 6 articles)
As the owner of Eight Belles, Porter figures he has the type of filly with the talent and toughness to beat the males in the Kentucky Derby. When the undistinguished colt Monba won the April 12 Blue Grass Stakes with highly regarded Pyro finishing 10th, the result might have surprised or confused many observers of horse racing. BALTIMORE It wasn't a dazzling 10-length runaway of the type that other recent Preakness winners have scored, but Curlin's photo-finish victory Saturday was a stunning, brilliant performance.
Alan Hansen on the Champions League (Sports, 6 articles)
(Daily Mirror) Arsenal's midfielder Mathieu Flamini has agreed to join Milan and the Gunners are facing a crucial meeting over Alexander Hleb's future. (The Independent) Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan has promised to deliver big-name players next season after missing out on Sol Campbell, Lassana Diarra and Luka Modric. Ahead of Tuesday's Champions League semi-final second leg against Barca, he said: " There was no way I could play the same team in both games.

Giants send $126 million left-hander Barry Zito to bullpen (Sports, 5 articles)
Barry Zito fell to 0-6 Sunday, rocked by the no-name Cincinnati Reds, a disastrous outing for the Giants' left-hander. It's hard to pinpoint what's wrong with Zito, but the answer could be as simple as: location, location, location. The row of four locker stalls along the north wall of the clubhouse, once the kingdom of Bonds, has become Kreepy Korner.
Brian Anderson's getting with the program :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: White Sox (Sports, 5 articles)
The bullpen shuffle Sunday brought right-hander Ehren Wassermann from Class AAA Charlotte to replace Mike MacDougal, who was sent down Saturday night as the White Sox try to bolster the relief corps. " He's been pitching well and closing games there manager Ozzie Guillen said of Wassermann, who hadn't allowed a hit or run in eight appearances with six saves. " We need a guy who can pitch one or two innings, especially against right-handed hitters and help Octavio Dotel in tough situations.

Yankees place Jorge Posada on DL for 1st time in his career (Sports, 5 articles)
The New York Yankees took the field Monday missing a familiar face: Jorge Posada, the club's proud catcher and one of its leaders, was in Alabama getting his injured right shoulder examined. Posada was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the first time in his career, ending a remarkable run of durability at baseball's most physically demanding position. By GEORGE A. KING III April 28, 2008 CLEVELAND - In a perfect world that may become reality this July or during the winter, Alex Rodriguez wants to play behind C.C. Sabathia and Chien-Ming Wang.
Variety is vital in training plans - (Sports, 4 articles)
A: It is a personal choice that can only be made by you, but if you want to continue to play other sports, of course you can and should. Most of my friends, who went on to be phenomenal lacrosse players, played a different sport each season as well. St. Frances girls lacrosse coach Artie Spruill is displaying an important feature of a good leader, namely the one that balances the limitations of an athlete in her charge against the player's ability to grow and improve.

Unbeaten UW men triumph over Cal (Sports, 4 articles)
The Seattle University softball team rode stellar pitching performances to a sweep of Central Washington, 8-0 and 2-0, Sunday at Logan Field, and moved within a game of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference lead. The Wildcats (17-25, 12-10 GNAC) loaded the bases in the fifth inning, but Reynolds struck out Holly Rossman for the third time to end the Wildcats' best threat of the day. BELMONT, Calif. - The top-ranked Washington men's varsity eight defeated California on Saturday in the annual dual regatta between West Coast rowing powers.
