While Clinton Focuses, Obama Is Distracted (U.S., 41 articles)
April 30, 2008 WASHINGTON - Barack Obama angrily denounced his former pastor yesterday for "divisive and destructive" remarks on race, seeking to contain a controversy that threatens to bury his presidential campaign. Since the Rev. Jeremiah Wright saga began, many have been saying forget about what Wright says, it only matters what Obama says. Some party leaders and superdelegates said the Wright controversy has given them pause, raising questions about Mr. Obama's electability in the general election next fall. Politics took a deep, personal cut for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday when the Democratic presidential candidate disowned his longtime pastor, the man with whom Obama shared some of the most important events of his life. Sensing no issue has threatened his campaign more than the controversy surrounding Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Sen. Barack Obama used much stronger words on Tuesday against his former pastor than anything he has said previously. It's crunch time on the campaign trail, and candidates can't afford any mistakes or for any controversial friends to suddenly reappear. Mr. Wright told the press club audience that the black church in America grew out of the oppression of black people, and that his sermons reflected that struggle.

Tension follows Olympic torch into China (World, 19 articles)
China's government on Thursday moved to head off nationwide protests targeting French retailer Carrefour as it sought to rein in what state media described as "excessive displays of patriotism" that risk damaging the country's image before the Beijing Olympics. " Tibetans will do everything in their power to protest during the torch relay said Lhadon Tethong, executive director of Students for a Free Tibet and one of the three activists put on a flight from Hong Kong earlier this week. Two Canadian activists planning to protest during Hong Kong's leg of the Olympic torch relay were among a handful of foreigners promptly deported upon arrival at Hong Kong's international airport Tuesday, the activists say.

After the Serena attack, in which eight people died, intelligence officials said Humayun had links to a network led by a militant leader Siraj Haqqani. Haqqani's network is believed to have links with al-Qaida members who operate from Pakistan's tribal areas, where Afghan officials say Haqqani is also based. Intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh has said those killed in the raid Wednesday and three other gunmen who tried to assassinate Karzai on Sunday, were in contact with militants inside Pakistan's tribal regions.
