U.S. terrorism report finds Al Qaeda attacks rose in Pakistan
Summary from United States, from articles in English

WASHINGTON Al Qaeda used a haven in Pakistan's tribal areas to double the number of attacks in that country and kill four times as many people there in 2007, says a State Department report to Congress released Wednesday. (article 4)
The annual terrorism report itself, however, says that a primary reason for the terrorist network's resurgence is a much-criticized cease-fire last year between the Pakistani federal government and tribal leaders beyond its authority near the border with Afghanistan. (article 4)
The report also said the number of deaths from the attacks in Pakistan quadrupled in that time period, to 1,335 fatalities, casting doubt on the American-backed counterterrorism policies of President Pervez Musharraf that the new government in Islamabad is now reshaping. (article 3)
There also was a 16 percent increase in terrorist attacks in neighboring Afghanistan in 2007, the report on global terrorism trends said. (article 2)
WASHINGTON Al-Qaida has rebuilt some of its pre-Sept 11 capabilities from remote hiding places in Pakistan, leading to a major spike in attacks last year there and in neighboring Afghanistan, the Bush administration said yesterday. (article 7)
The west is struggling in the ideological battle against radical Islam and has failed to provide an effective response to extremist propaganda, the US said on Wednesday. (article 5)
