Fed Cuts Rate but Hints About a Pause
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
The Fed's action brought the federal funds rate - the rate it charges banks for overnight loans - to 2 percent, from 2.25 percent, the lowest level since November 2004. (article 5) Following is the full text of the statement released Wednesday by the Federal Reserve: The Federal Open Market Committee decided today to lower its target for the federal funds rate 25 basis points, to 2 percent. (article 9) The U.S. Federal Reserve did as the market expected and cut its key interest rate by a modest quarter of a percentage point on Wednesday. (article 2) "Economic activity remains weak said a Fed statement, but added that the central bank expects inflation will" moderate in coming quarters " as energy and other commodity prices level off. (article 2) And, we were led to believe, the era of rate cuts that began amid last August's credit crisis would end with Wedneday's rate cut, which brought the Fed Funds rate down to 2 per cent. (article 7) The poor record of economic growth, reported by the Commerce Department on Wednesday morning, reflected what most Americans have been experiencing since late last year - declines in consumer spending, housing prices and business investment, along with spreading unemployment. (article 4)
