China's crackdown on violent protests against Chinese rule in Tibet has triggered attempts to disrupt the torch run celebrating the August games at other stops of the torch relay. HAVANA Cuba's top sports official accused the U.S. government of masterminding protests to disrupt the torch relay for the Beijing Olympics, part of what he called a U.S. plan to promote an international boycott of the games. China moved to head off nationwide protests against the French retailer Carrefour on Thursday, fearing that they threatened to damage the country's image ahead of the Beijing Olympics.

As the federal investigation into corruption in state government intensified in 2004, a business associate of Tony Rezko received a grand jury subpoena. Those alleged efforts were disclosed in federal court this morning, as prosecutors sought to have them introduced into the corruption trial of Rezko, who is accused of seeking kickbacks and campaign contributions to Blagojevich from companies seeking state business. Tony Rezko asked an official in Gov. Blagojevich's administration to pay him $25,000 so Rezko could use the money to keep construction contractors from putting a lien on the governor's home, federal prosecutors said in court today.

Labour suffers big council losses (U.S., 14 articles)

The final seat in the local election count at one East Sussex council has been decided by drawing lots, after six recounts failed to seal a result. The Greens have become the second largest party in Norwich, after gaining three seats to take their tally to 13. The party has dropped from 37 seats on the council four years ago to 22 now and is no longer the biggest group.

SAN MARCOS, Texas - One of the hundreds of young polygamist-sect members taken into state custody gave birth Tuesday to a healthy boy while child welfare officials, state troopers and fellow sect members stood watch outside the maternity ward. SAN ANGELO, Texas The mothers of children removed from a polygamous sect's ranch in West Texas after an abuse allegation are appealing to Gov. Rick Perry for help, saying some of their children have become sick and even required hospitalization.
