Nick Clegg on Friday hailed the Liberal Democrats as a party that could "win everywhere" after defying sceptics to pass narrowly his first electoral test as party leader. Against expectations, the Lib Dems clinched second place in vote share, broadly consolidating seats gained in the wake of the Iraq war and making advances in Labour strongholds such as Sheffield, Hull and Burnley.
