Obama confident about winning Clinton voters (U.S., 93 articles)
|
Other advisers said in interviews that her campaign was deep in debt and nearly broke, raising questions about what kind of campaign she can run going forward, although the campaign said it was running ads in Oregon and West Virginia. One Clinton adviser said the campaign was struggling to arrange meetings with large numbers of uncommitted superdelegates - the elected officials and party leaders who have their own say in voting for the Democratic nominee. Mrs. Clinton won a close race in New Jersey, where voters said that the economy was the most important issue in deciding how to cast their vote, according to exit polls. Democratic primary voters overwhelmingly said that a candidate's ability to bring about needed change was the most important factor in the way they voted, and those voters supported Mr. Obama in large numbers. Analysts say that polls in the heat of the primary campaign don't reflect what will happen in November, and Obama's campaign insists Clinton supporters will return to the fold. They said they expected fund-raising to become even harder; one adviser said the campaign was essentially broke, and several others refused to say whether Mrs. Clinton had lent the campaign money from her personal account to keep it afloat.
