Obama's chief strategist said in a television interview Sunday that his campaign is considering a suggestion from McCain's campaign for the two presidential hopefuls to participate in joint town meetings and debates around America starting this summer. In a sign of what could be an extremely unusual fall campaign, the two sides said Saturday that they would be open to holding joint forums or unmoderated debates across the country in front of voters through the summer.

The American military said 21 suspected gunmen were killed in Shiite militia strongholds late Tuesday, while Iraqi officials said 15 civilians were among the dead, including two women. BANGKOK, Thailand Thai authorities beefed up security in Bangkok's historic center, deploying 2,000 police to protect the Olympic flame from protesters ahead of the torch relay Saturday. A Chinese man was arrested for saying on the internet that he planned to grab the Olympic torch during its relay through eastern China, police said Sunday. DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania About 1,000 people cheered and marched with a team of 80 athletes and a Cabinet minister participating Sunday in the Tanzania leg of the Olympic torch relay, the flame's only stop in Africa.

Myanmar Junta Still Blocking Much Cyclone Aid (World, 26 articles)

The junta is also continuing to deny entry to foreign aid workers, who relief officials say are needed to prevent more deaths. WASHINGTON First lady Laura Bush on Monday said the United States stands ready to pump more aid into Myanmar to help its recovery from a cyclone so devastating the death toll could top 10,000. Five days after the storm, the junta continued to stall on visas for U.N. teams and other foreign aid workers anxious to deliver food, water and medicine to survivors amid fears the death toll could hit 100,000.
