John McCain outlines a plan to tackle global warming
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
John McCain has been engaged in the fight against global warming for years, even at the expense of breaking with Republican orthodoxy and with President Bush on the issue. (article 7) The senator has proposed mandatory limits on greenhouse gas emissions in the United States - Mr. Bush is opposed - but Mr. McCain's Democratic competitors, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, have offered plans to reduce emissions more quickly. (article 6) At a wind turbine manufacturer here, McCain called for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by mid-century and pledged to take the lead in pressing rising economic powers India and China to cut emissions. (article 2) The presumptive Republican nominee also prodded China and India - two major emitters of the greenhouse gases blamed for the planet's warming - to join the effort. (article 3) NORTH BEND, Wash. - John McCain continued his overtures to green voters Tuesday, paying a soggy visit to the Cascade Range foothills and further driving an environmental wedge between himself and the Bush administration. (article 5) McCain said the U.S. should emulate Europe in advancing its methods of cleaning up the radioactive byproducts of nuclear power. (article 5) Two aides to Republican presidential nominee John McCain have stood down over ties to a lobbying firm that has represented Burma's military leaders. (article 12)
