Microsoft's Yahoo move, oil prices shake market -
Summary from United States, from articles in English
President Hugo Chavez s government is charging foreign oil companies a 50 percent tax on additional earnings when crude prices exceed $70 a barrel and 60 percent when prices top $100 a barrel. (article 8) For individual food items, the gains are even more stark, with the price of bread up 14.7 percent over the past year and milk prices up 13.3 percent over the same period. (article 7) The Federal Reserve said that industrial output rose by 0.3 percent in March, better than the 0.1 percent decline that analysts had expected. (article 7) NEW YORK- Wall Street turned in a mixed performance Tuesday after a fresh report on retail sales and a new oil price record told investors the same old story: The economy is hurting and costs are rising, but things could be worse. (article 4) The Commerce Department reported that retail sales fell in April, but the 0.2 percent dip was in line with analysts' forecasts. (article 6) The report revealed higher-than-expected sales excluding automobiles, and revised its reading on March sales excluding autos up to 0.4 percent from 0.1 percent. (article 6) NEW YORK - Wall Street rallied today as oil prices, supported by a stronger dollar, fell back and alleviated some of investors' concerns about accelerating inflation. (article 2)
