Earthquake in China Highlights the Vulnerability of Schools in Many Countries
Summary from United States, from articles in English
The enormous loss of life in collapsed schools around China's quake-stricken Sichuan Province could have been significantly reduced using known methods for designing or retrofitting structures in earthquake zones, several experts on global hazards said Tuesday. (article 5) But China is just one of many countries with known earthquake vulnerability that has been slow to transform schools - a keystone of any community - from potential death traps into havens, these experts and some community campaigners for school safety said. (article 5) The tectonic battle between the Indian subcontinent and the Eurasia Plate has been raging for tens of millions of years, pushing the Himalayas higher and spurring countless earthquakes such as the one that struck central China on Monday. (article 4) The clashing continental plates move an average of 2 inches a year, creating stress along an extensive series of faults throughout Asia. (article 4) The most devastating earthquake to hit China in three decades killed up to 9,000 people on Monday as schools, factories and other buildings were toppled, with the death toll likely to soar. (article 2) Feb. 2003 - At least 94 people are killed and more than 200 injured when a quake measuring 6.8 hits sparsely populated Jiashi county in the remote northwestern region of Xinjiang. (article 2)
