Poised Penguins upend Flyers in Game 3 (Sports, 13 articles)
When the Penguins tanked the final game of the regular season against the Flyers, a lot of hockey people thought Pittsburgh might have been somewhat wary of facing the physical Flyers right off the bat. Marian Hossa scored two goals and Sidney Crosby had two assists, while Ryan Whitney and Ryan Malone completed the scoring for the second-seeded Penguins, who lead the best-of-seven series 3-0. Whitney and the Pittsburgh Penguins are one victory away from playing in the Stanley Cup Final, and the path was paved by his goal that was three months in the making. PHILADELPHIA - One win away from their first Stanley Cup final berth in 16 years, the Pittsburgh Penguins are far removed from Michel Therrien's famous tirade just two and a half seasons ago. On the night of Jan. 10, 2006, after a 3-1 home loss to the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh's eighth defeat in 11 games since Therrien took over behind the bench, the former Montreal Canadiens head coach exploded. PHILADELPHIA Ryan Whitney and Marian Hossa scored less than three minutes apart in the first period and the Pittsburgh Penguins held the Philadelphia Flyers to 18 shots Tuesday night in a 4-1 victory.

A number of Rangers supporters in Manchester for the Uefa Cup final have clashed with riot police after a big screen in the city centre broke down. Around 30 people were arrested in the city, including six held after a Russian fan was stabbed inside the City of Manchester stadium. A skilled and more inventive Zenit St Petersburg justly won this final last night, thanks to goals from Igor Denisov and Konstantin Zyrianov, which saw Walter Smith's side finally crumple after a heroic, not to say dogged, run.
Bryant's overtime performance a sore spot for Lakers (Sports, 10 articles)
May 13, 2008 EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - Kobe Bryant met the media yesterday with a new companion - an electronic stimulation device hooked up to his sore lower back. Kobe Bryant didn't practice, didn't even shoot the ball Tuesday, but reiterated he would be part of the Lakers' most important game so far this season. While most who experience back pain feel muscle spasms during simple routines, such as leaning over or sleeping, Bryant said his play was most affected while trying to jump.

At 25, Justine Henin says she's quitting tennis (Sports, 9 articles)
In January, when Justine Henin was riding a 32-match victory streak, retirement seemed as preposterous a thought as a switch to a two-handed backhand. LIMELETTE, Belgium- Justine Henin retired from tennis Wednesday, an abrupt ending to a short and successful career in which she won seven Grand Slam singles titles and leaves while ranked No. 1. The 25-year-old Belgian made the surprising announcement at a news conference Wednesday, less than two weeks before the start of the French Open.

NEW YORK - The New York Knicks introduced Mike D'Antoni as their new coach Tuesday, hoping his high-scoring brand of basketball will turn around a team with seven straight losing seasons. By MARC BERMAN May 12, 2008 Mike D'Antoni has a lot on his plate this summer, moving to New York, devising a new playbook for the dysfunctional Knicks, reconstructing his assistant coaching staff. Annika Sorenstam Will Reportedly End LPGA Tour Career at End of Season (Sports, 5 articles)
Annika Sorenstam has always played golf with a controlled precision and singular focus that made her the best player in women's golf for the better part of a decade, perhaps the best ever. Her 72 victories are third to Kathy Whitworth's 88 and Mickey Wright's 82, and her 10 major championships are fourth all time, five shy of Patty Berg's record 15. Fresh off her third win in eight starts, a dominating seven-stroke triumph that seemed to be an emphatic statement that she has indeed returned to the top of her game, Annika Sorenstam said yesterday that the time is right.
Orioles' West Coast Struggles Continue (Sports, 7 articles)
With his support group in the stands, the left-handed Olson continued his surprising dominance since being called up from Class AAA Norfolk last week, allowing just four hits in 6 1/3 innings against the Oakland Athletics. Olson's effort was not enough in a 2-1 extra-innings loss to the A's before an announce crowd of 10,128. Markakis looked to the skies, grabbed his helmet in an expression of disbelief and jawed at Runge, an exchange of words that dragged on so long that Orioles Manager Dave Trembley left his dugout to defuse the situation.

Richard Hamilton scored 31 points, made victory-sealing free throws late in the game, and Tayshaun Prince had a key block to help Detroit eliminate Orlando.
