Hezbollah takes over large portion of Beirut -
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
BEIRUT, Lebanon - Running gunbattles raged in parts of Beirut yesterday after the leader of Hezbollah accused Lebanon's Western-backed government of declaring war on his Shiite group. (article 3) But throughout the day, there were ominous signs of aggression in a country haunted by its long civil war, including the type of tit-for-tat sectarian attacks that characterize the Sunni-Shiite conflict in Iraq. (article 1) Lebanon's rival political leaders are holding talks in Qatar aimed at ending the sectarian conflict which left at least 65 people dead in recent days. (article 12) The warring political camps in Lebanon agreed Thursday to hold renewed talks in a deal negotiated by Arab diplomats that reopened the country's airport and appeared to end a week of bloody political crisis. (article 7) Lebanon came chillingly close last week to renewing its 1975-1990 civil war as fighting erupted around Beirut and the northern city of Tripoli. (article 11) Lebanon's pro-Western government and the Hezbollah-led opposition have agreed to discuss electing the country's army chief as its next president, following some of the worst sectarian strife since a 15-year civil war ended nearly two decades ago. (article 8) The announcement was made after a day of intensive meetings between Lebanese leaders and an Arab diplomatic delegation led by the foreign minister of Qatar. (article 5)
