Hopes Fading in Search for Quake Survivors in China
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
BEIJING, China (CNN) China on Monday began three days of national mourning as the death toll from last week's devastating earthquake mounted and rescue workers continued to search for survivors among the rubble (article 18) Across the quake zone yesterday, rescue teams rushed to isolated mountain villages and previously inaccessible communities, hoping to save those still trapped under the rubble. (article 13) The official Xinhua News Agency said the death toll exceeded 12,000 in Sichuan province alone, and 18,645 were still buried in debris in the city of Mianyang, near the epicenter of Monday's massive, 7.9-magnitude quake. (article 7) Thousands of earthquake survivors fled tent camps and villages across the ravaged landscape of southwestern China on Saturday after the government warned that several lakes and rivers were getting dangerously close to overflowing because landslides have blocked water flow. (article 1) DEYANG, China China ordered dozens more helicopters to drop aid into remote areas of quake-hit Sichuan province Thursday as rescuers broke through key roads to the epicenter that had been blocked since a powerful earthquake that has directly affected 10 million people. (article 9) In the disaster zone, efforts appeared to shift Sunday from searching for buried survivors to clearing corpses from shattered buildings as the government said the confirmed death toll rose to 32,476. (article 23)
