Clinton wins Kentucky; Obama poised to reach milestone in Democratic race (U.S., 69 articles)
|
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton won the Kentucky presidential primary on Tuesday by a decisive margin, buoyed by support from white working-class voters, and she pledged to extend her campaign to the final round of contests in the race for the Democratic nomination. " Some have said your votes didn't matter, that this campaign was over, that allowing everyone to vote and every vote to count would somehow be a mistake Mrs. Clinton said. The AP tracks the delegate races by calculating the number of national convention delegates won by candidates in each presidential primary or caucus, based on state and national party rules, and by interviewing unpledged delegates to obtain their preferences. The campaign said the $22 million total represented the campaign's second best fund-raising month to date and includes $10 million raised by the campaign in the 48 hours after her Pennsylvania victory last month. Obama, who holds a significant lead in delegates going into Tuesday's contests and is favoured to win the Democratic nomination, has instead focused on targeting presumptive Republican candidate John McCain. Obama has struggled in other states to win the votes of white, working class voters, and they could be the deciding vote next Tuesday.

The country's military government, or junta, refused to allow international aid and aid workers into Myanmar, worsening the situation, according to international critics. WASHINGTON First lady Laura Bush on Monday said the United States stands ready to pump more aid into Myanmar to help its recovery from a cyclone so devastating the death toll could top 10,000. Six days after the storm, the combined effort of relief agencies and Myanmar's government had delivered aid to only 220,000 of an estimated 1.9 million people in need, the Red Cross said Friday.
