Dell beats forecasts as notebook PC sales jump
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
DALLAS Dell Inc. said Thursday that its profit and sales grew in its fiscal first quarter, beating Wall Street expectations and signaling that the computer maker's turnaround effort may be working. (article 5) Dell has announced a plan to cut 8,900 jobs to reduce costs, but said Asia with faster sales growth and a large part of the company's supply chain would see more job growth. (article 7) A jump in international sales helped Dell to withstand weakness in its core business of selling to US commercial customers during its most recent quarter, the maker of PCs, servers and other hardware reported on Thursday. (article 6) The world's second-largest personal computer maker pointed to the strong performance as evidence that a year-long turnaround led by founder Michael Dell, who returned to the chief executive post in January 2007, was yielding results. (article 3) Net income in the three months ended May 2 rose to $784 million, or 38 cents per share, from $759 million, or 33 cents per share, a year earlier. (article 3) Dell, one of the world's largest computer manufacturers, may be forced to pay restitution to hundreds of customers apparently stung by shoddy customer service and deceptive financing offers. (article 1)
