State urges California Supreme Court not to delay same-sex marriages
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
SAN FRANCISCO After fighting same-sex marriage for four years, the state Thursday urged the California Supreme Court to reject petitions that would delay enforcement of the court's landmark ruling permitting gays to wed. (article 9) ALBANY, N.Y. - Opposition surfaced yesterday against Governor David Paterson's directive to New York agencies to recognize gay marriages legally performed in other states and countries. (article 4) Mr. Paterson has directed state agencies to respond to a recent court ruling by reviewing more than 1,300 state policies that affect married people. (article 6) SAN FRANCISCO - Barring unexpected legal action, same-sex couples throughout California will be able to obtain marriage licenses from county clerks beginning June 17, state officials said Wednesday. (article 14) Conservative groups that want the state Supreme Court to delay same-sex marriages in California until voters decide whether to reinstate a ban on those marriages in November ran into opposition Thursday from Attorney General Jerry Brown, whose office defended the ban in court. (article 10) A group opposed to gay marriage has asked the court to stay its decision until after the November election, when voters are likely to face a ballot initiative that would once again define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. (article 11)
