United Airlines, US Airways ground merger talks
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
(Look at electricity companies) It's triply terrible when the industry has a practically perfect record of bungling mergers. (article 10) In the view of airline executives and analysts, the industry is facing its toughest challenge yet, with little prospect that carriers can return to profits anytime soon. (article 12) A representative for the second-largest U.S. airline also said Friday the Chicago-based carrier is "seriously considering" following AMR Corp.'s American Airlines in charging passengers to check their first piece of luggage. (article 15) CHICAGO- United Airlines scrapped its latest attempt to combine with US Airways and create the world's largest carrier, formally backing away Friday from a deal that likely would have meant fewer routes and higher ticket prices for consumers. (article 6) Now the question for those and other U.S. airlines is how to get by and make money with oil prices near $130 a barrel. (article 6) The attempted pairing, which would create the world's largest carrier, faces numerous hurdles but is still possible despite published reports that the talks may have broken down, the people told The Associated Press on Wednesday. (article 8) The most recent University of Michigan's American Customer Satisfaction Index reports that airlines, which scored below the IRS in customer satisfaction last year, dropped even further this year. (article 1)
