It's Celtics-Lakers again in the NBA finals (Sports, 21 articles)
Pierce, now 30, has considerably more invested in the outcome than a child's rooting interest. After trailing by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, the Celtics rallied behind the play of Paul Pierce, who scored 27 points to power Boston to its second consecutive win in the best-of-seven series. After struggling through the first four games of the series, Ray Allen resurrected himself in Game 5, scoring 29 points for the Celtics in a 106-102 win over the Detroit Pistons tonight at the TD Banknorth Garden. Boston's Big Three shot awfully as did most of the Celtics, but the NBA s top-seeded team stayed competitive for much of the game thanks to a stark disparity in free throws. With an opportunity to clinch the Eastern Conference championship against the Detroit Pistons, the Celtics did just that Friday night, avoiding their third Game 7 in as many postseason series this year with an 89-81 victory at the Palace. The Boston Celtics got past an old nemesis to set up an NBA finals matchup with another rival - the Los Angeles Lakers. Boston Celtics will face the LA Lakers in the NBA finals after beating Detroit Pistons 89-81 to clinch the Eastern Conference final series.

  • Dutrow: When Big Brown Takes Lead, It's Over (Sports, 12 articles)
As the next two weeks play out leading up to the 133rd Preakness, the conversation will be less about Big Brown's competition he has nearly none but rather of horse racing safety. The bay colt threw a scare into Dutrow when a quarter crack, about three-quarters of an inch long, was discovered Friday. So much so that when Dutrow and McKinlay spoke Monday night, it was decided if the trainer thought the hoof looked good in the morning, a trip around Belmont Park would be in order.

  • Take your pick, Chicago: Beasley and Rose should be keepers (Sports, 5 articles)
Who's better? Neither of the presumptive top two picks in next month's NBA draft took long before answering, and naturally, their opinions couldn't have been more different. Beasley is a forward from Kansas State, which reached the NCAA Tournament thanks in large part to his 26.2 points and 12.4 rebounds per game. Some experts say Beasley is certain to be taken with the No. 1 overall selection by the Bulls; others insist that Rose will begin his pro career playing in the jersey of his hometown team in Chicago.

PITTSBURGH - Vancouver Canucks rookie defenseman Luc Bourdon owned a motorcycle for just days before dying when the bike veered into the path of a truck on a winding, two-lane road, close friend Kris Letang of the Pittsburgh Penguins said Friday. Usain Bolt of Jamaica walks the track with his country's flag after setting a new world record of 9.72 seconds in the 100 metre sprint at the Reebok Grand Prix at Icahn Stadium in New York. (Stephen Chernin/Associated Press) Jamaican runner Usain Bolt, who doesn't even consider the 100 metres his best race, set the world record Saturday night in New York City with a time of 9.72 seconds. The six-foot-four sprinter created a big gap between himself and Tyson Gay at about the halfway point, then routed him to the finish line.
Mets spoil Torre's return to New York (Sports, 4 articles)
Joe Torre was home again - if long enough only to get his daughter to school, pick up his car keys and drive to Shea Stadium. The Los Angeles Dodgers' first-year manager returned to his hometown Thursday night for the opener of a four-game series against the New York Mets, an 8-4 loss. Always popular in town, Torre managed his first game in New York since parting ways with the Yankees last October after 12 winning seasons.

Bedard excellent in Mariners win (Sports, 6 articles)
SEATTLE - Felix Hernandez allowed just two hits in seven innings, and Kenji Johjima likely scored the most unusual run of his career with a steal of home in the Seattle Mariners' 5-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. Johjima added a two-run single in the first, backing a superb performance on the mound from Hernandez, who became the first Seattle pitcher to quiet the Tigers' bats in their five meetings this season. Mariners manager John McLaren did his best to deflect them, amid mounting speculation that Sexson's time with the team is nearing an end.
Ramirez hits No. 500, leads Red Sox over Orioles (Sports, 7 articles)
Manny Ramirez became the 24th player to hit 500 home runs, connecting in the seventh inning against Chad Bradford to help the Boston Red Sox beat the host Baltimore Orioles, 6-3, on Saturday night. He stood and watched the flight of the ball, then took off around the bases in a slow trot, a broad smile on his face. REDS 8, BRAVES 7 Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 599th career home run, leaving him one shy of a seldom-reached mark, and Jay Bruce extended his amazing weeklong debut with a 10th-inning homer for host Cincinnati.

  • Beckham back as captain for England (Sports, 5 articles)
Fifa vice-president Jack Warner has warned that England's "arrogance" could cost them the chance of hosting the World Cup in 2018. Warner has given his backing to England's bid but believes the way the country is perceived by other European nations could be a problem. The 65-year-old president of Concacaf, which covers North and Central America, and the Caribbean, has again given his support to England ahead of their friendly against Trinidad and Tobago, but said that alone may not be enough.

By GEORGE A. KING III May 31, 2008 MINNEAPOLIS - Beginning Tuesday, Yankee fans won't have to wait until the late innings to experience Joba Mania. Another was the pros and cons of Chamberlain making the big step on the road as opposed to at Yankee Stadium.

The Revolution (6-3-2, 20 points), playing without starting strikers Kenny Mansally (World Cup qualifying) and Taylor Twellman (right ankle sprain), took over first place in Major League Soccer.
Wasps 26-16 Leicester (Sports, 7 articles)
Lawrence Dallaglio's playing career came to an end with just over 10 minutes remaining of the Premiership final 26-16 victory over Leicester. At the time the Tigers, who had been down and out at half-time, had fought back well enough to give themselves a glimmer of hope of ruining Dallaglio's farewell. Even without their veteran leader Wasps had enough in the tank to hold off their huge rivals and secure the fifth league title since Dallaglio became the club's captain way back in 1995.

Frustrated Earnhardt won't blame Kyle Busch - (Sports, 6 articles)

Hamlin arrived 15th in the point standings but held on after twice finishing in the top three as one of the only cars able to run with the Hendrick teams here. The Hendrick cars dominated again, with Johnson, Gordon and Earnhardt all leading for long stretches and Casey Mears running mostly in the top 10.
With Resolve and a Plan, China Puts Its Focus on Olympic Gold (Sports, 5 articles)
Roush said the United States has no official long-term plan like the 119 Project, a government-financed effort China began in 2000 to win the most gold medals at home, in the Beijing Olympics. The 119 stood for the number of Olympic gold medals awarded in sports the Chinese have traditionally been weak, like track and field, swimming and rowing. The United States' strategy coming out of 2004, Roush said, was to focus on sports in which the team had shown some success, like fencing, triathlon, archery and some disciplines in shooting and rowing.

Raiders' unlikely run falls short - (Sports, 4 articles)
Down 2-0 in the sixth inning, the Raiders had the bases loaded with two outs when Schmeiser got Biegel to ground out to third baseman Amanda Aikin. The Patriots came back with five runs in the top of the seventh - pounding out six hits in the inning, highlighted by Chelsea Stern's run-scoring triple to left-center field - to secure the championship. Saturday, May 31, 2008 (05-30) 19:25 PDT The Raiders drafted Darren McFadden because of his phenomenal speed on the field.
