Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, the leading London-based law firm, on Monday unveiled a near-40 per cent rise in profits, in the latest striking evidence of the legal profession's continued prosperity amid the fall-out from the credit crunch. (article 9) Plunging bank stocks forced the FTSE 100 below 6,000 as investors frightened by Bradford & Bingley's surprise profits warning fled the sector. (article 4) The banking sector was down 1.5 per cent by the late afternoon, compared with a 1 per cent fall in the FTSE 100. (article 4) The cost of home improvements has shot up by a fifth in two years because of rising costs of raw materials and transport and a growing shortage of tradesmen. (article 8) For example, roofing costs have risen by 26 per cent, plumbing and electric work by 22 per cent and painting by 17 per cent, all outstripping inflation over the past two years. (article 8) Canadians spent $19.8 billion on housing through the first three months of this year, up 7.5 per cent from the first quarter of 2007, Statistics Canada said Monday. (article 7) Spending on apartments increased by 17.5 per cent to $2.6 billion, while spending on single-family housing construction rose by 3.7 per cent to $5.6 billion. (article 7)
